Desis Worldwide

Bollywood Represented at Cannes Film Festival

Friday, May 19, 2006

The Cannes International Film Festival, 2006, began on May 17. It is the place for film stars and producers worldwide to promote their business, and Bollywood, India's version of Hollywood, is this year being well represented.

Coming to Bollywood stars, Aishwarya Rai's position is special wherever she may go, success is there. Since the festival is turning this time to be a commercial meet for Bollywood producers, they preferred their own Bollywood stars to be by their sides as they are promoting their product.

Last year, Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat graced Cannes with their presence, while today Karan Johar and Suneel Darshan are among the Bollywood personalities worth mentioning. It is natural that they would like to promote their films.

Before leaving for the Cannes Film Festival, Karan Johar said, "Europe is a huge market for Bollywood films. We have not tapped it properly and the Cannes International Film Festival will give a perfect opportunity for producers like me, to give an awareness about my films and other Indian films."

Johar is going to market his latest film 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' at the festival starring his favorite Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta.

The movie is to be released in August 2006 and to promote the movie, he asked Preity Zinta to accompany him.

Last year at Cannes, actresses like Aishwarya Rai and Nandita Das were selected to be jury members of the festival and so was Mallika Sherawat, who stole the show. She posed with Jackie Chan to promote her film 'The Myth'.

Aishwarya Rai will attend the Cannes Film Festival this year again, although it will be as part of the audience.
