Disney to make Bollywood 'High School Musical'

Disney has announced it is planning to make a Bollywood feature-film version of 'High School Musical', a TV musical based loosely on Shakespere's 'Romeo and Juliet', using actors from India and Indian-flavored songs.

Disney is also considering re-shooting 'High School Musical' with Spanish-speaking actors to target Latin markets.

Walt Disney Studios has already shipped more than 1.8 million DVDs of 'High School Musical' to retailers, with plans to sell it in 100 countries.

The musical centers on a high school basketball star and wannabe singer named Troy, and the nerdy Gabreilla. The mismatched teens meet at a New Years Eve karaoke contest, fall in love, and then decide to audition for their high school musical against the wishes of their friends, thus sealing their fate.

'High School Musical' was one of 65 made-for-TV movies produced by Disney for the Disney Channel since it's debut in January with a modest $4.2 million, when the young audiences started learning all the upbeat pop songs and dance numbers, making the movie a unexpected smash hit.
