Tuesday, October 05, 2004

Hyderabad, Oct. 4: Gandhi Hospital became a battleground on Monday, with students from Sangareddy?s DVR College of Engineering trashing the hospital and attacking medical students and staff who retaliated. The provocation was the death of Mahender Reddy, a BE III DVR student, on Sunday night. Mahender was brought to the hospital after an accident at Bowenpally. DVR students said he died of doctors? negligence.

Medical services were suspended as doctors and hospital staff took on about 800 DVR students who had driven down from Sangareddy, 60 km away. Normalcy was restored after police imposed Section 144. By then, five persons were injured, three hospital floors ransacked and 10 buses damaged and one set afire in the six-hour drama. In the maternity ward, mothers carried their newborns and ran for cover as students rampaged.

LATE NIGHT ATTACK
Late in the night, there was another attack after in-patient Shaheeda Begum of Moram-banda in Secunderabad died due to lack of medicare. She had been admitted with fits on the 2nd. Angry relatives gheraoed doctors and broke windowpanes. They were arrested. Junior doctors lead by association leader Sridhar Reddy attac-ked three reporters covering the late-night incident.

DVR CHARGE
?Mahender Reddy was injured in a road mishap at 9.30 pm on on Sunday. He was brought to the hospital immediately but the staff demanded Rs 40 as bribe. Even after the bribe was paid, the doctors didn?t attend on him for at least three hours. He was declared dead around 11.45 pm. This is sheer negligence on the part of the doctors,? alleged Shaila, a second year student of the engineering college.

?Our college students donated blood several times to the Red Cross Society. And when our friend required blood on Sunday, the hospital authorities couldn?t arrange for it. On Monday, we organised a blood donation camp at our college,? K Sampath, another DVR student, told Deccan Chronicle.
